TEMPLE TOUR |
| Siem Reap in the provincial town
from where you can explore the
temples of Angkor. This morning
visit the famous Angkor Wat Temple,
the largest and undoubtedly the most
breathtaking of the monuments of the
Angkor Archeological Park. It was
constructed as a funerary temple for
Suryavarman ll (ruled 1112-52) to
honor Vishnu, the Hindu deity who
the king identified with. Then
continue for the visit of the most
intriguing of the temples of Angkor;
The Ta Prohm temple built by
Jayavarman VII. The main
characteristic of this temple is
that you feel like small discoverers
uncovering a lost treasure in the
jungle. In the afternoon you will
visit of the Great City of Angkor
Thom. You will visit first the South
Gate of Angkor Thom, built by
Angkor's greatest king, Jayavarman
VII, who ruled from 1181-1201, and
came to power just after the
disastrous sacking by the Chams of
the previous Khmer capital. It is
enclosed by a square wall 8m high
and 12 km in length and encircled by
a moat 100m wide, said to have been
inhabited by fierce crocodiles.
Continue to the Bayon Temple, known
to have been built by Jayavarman
VII, though for many years its
origins were obscure. Shrouded in
dense jungle, it also took
researchers some time to realise
that it stands in the exact center
of the city of Angkor Thom. Then
visit the Baphoun, the Terrace of
Elephants and the Terrace of Leper
King. (L) |
