History
Mount Kailash (6,714 in.) the famed holy peak is situated in
western Tibet. This legendary mountain is revered by four
different religion and is regarded as the most sacred pilgrimage
destination in Asia. Hindus and the Tibetan Buddhists regard Mt.
Kailash as the earthly manifestation of Mt. Meru, their
spiritual centre of the Universe. On top is the abode of God
Shiva, the widely worshipped Hindu God. Sprawling below is the
sacred Manasarovar lake, where a drink of its waters washes the
sins of a hundred lifetime and a ritual bath delivers a pilgrim
to paradise. For the Jams, Kailash is acclaimed as the site
where their first prophet achieved enlightenment and for the Bon
religion it is the site where its founder Shranab is believed to
have descended from heaven.
